What Do You Study For An MBA?
The MBA degree is becoming increasingly specialised, so what you will study will depend on which degree you take.
Because everyone knows the MBA as a business management qualification most institutions will ask for some core courses, combined with elective courses relevant to the specific degree being taken.
The core courses usually consist of the following general subject areas:
- Economics
- Microeconomics
- Finance/Accounting
- Quantitative business analysis
- Human resource management
- Information management and technology
- Marketing and marketing strategies
- Organisational and operational management
The core courses will be designed to provide the fundamental business and management skills and they are especially important for people who do not start off with a management or business related degree.
After the core courses the entire business and management world is available. Each institution will offer its own selection of elective courses. It is usual to find electives in most schools that take the study of things from the core courses much further. Beyond that most schools will offer their own specialised degrees in many subjects such as:
- Health Management
- Real Estate
- Hospitality Management
- Taxation
. . . and I could go on! What you will study and where you study are inextricably linked.
