The Number Of MBA's Awarded Annually.
The number of MBA degrees awarded annually is rising steadily every year. The most recent figures from the US Department of education are for the 2004/2005 academic year, and in that year over 142,000 MBA degrees were awarded in the US.
Precise figures are not available for the rest of the world, but if we estimate that there is an average of 100 degrees awarded each year from each institution that offers the MBA degree then we can come to an estimate of just over a million MBA degrees awarded annually.
In 1975 there were approximately 36,000 MBA degrees awarded. In 2000 approximately 112,000 – which is a 310% increase! If there is the same increase over the next 25 years then in 2025 there will be nearly 350,000 awarded.
But you shouldn't assume that the market for MBA degrees is becoming saturated, as the degrees are becoming increasingly specialised. The MBA is becoming an umbrella term rather than just a degree on its own. There are also an increasing number of sponsored degrees, that is degrees specific to a professional body, or employer which allows that body or employer to design a curriculum and an accredited school to teach and award the degree.
